Antimicrobial resistance is major public health issue because the pipeline of drugs is running dry. Estimation of the number of deaths caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria within the next decades is worrisome. In this context, the interest for using bacteriophages, viruses that recognize, infect and lyse specifically bacteria, is growing supported by experimental data and case reports. During this talk, I’ll highlight the challenges for researchers and clinicians to perform translational research for improving patient’s access to phage therapy. More specifically, I will show how the use of animal models helped us deciphering the parameters involved in the efficacy of treatments in terms of doses and route of administration of bacteriophages (pharmacometry), as well as host response (immune cells) and phage resistance (molecular mechanisms).
